CONCEPT OF ADVERBS

DEFINITION:

An adverb is a word which adds to the meaning of a verb and tells how and where the thing is done.

Examples:

  • Prabh sang sweetly.

  • My sister came yesterday.

  • Mohan is very intelligent.

KINDS OF ADVERB:

ADVERB OF MANNER:

  • Loudly, honestly, bravely, wisely, foolishly etc.

Examples:

  • The soldiers fought bravely.

  • My father served honestly.

ADVERB OF PLACE:

Outside, everywhere, near, in, out, away, there etc.

Examples:

  • Children are playing outside.

  • My friend lives near the market.

ADVERB OF TIME:

Early, daily, presently, yesterday, tomorrow etc.

Examples:

  • He went to Canada yesterday.

  • I go to school daily.

ADVERB OF FREQUENCY:

Always, often, seldom, never, again etc.

Examples:

  • We often visit cinema hall to watch movie.

  • He frequently visits hill station.

ADVERB OF DEGREE:

“Very, quite, entirely, partly, almost, much etc”

Examples:

  • He is quite an aggressive boy.

  • She is very beautiful.

INTERROGATIVE ADVERBS:

What, which, when, why, where, how, much, how often etc.

Examples:

  • How often do you visit market?

  • Where did he go?

The position of the Adverb in a sentence:

SUBJECT+ADVERB+MAIN VERB

(We place adverb of frequency before main verb (expect with “To be”)

Examples:

  • I always remember to do my homework.

  • He normally gets good marks in exams.

An adverb of frequency goes after the verb “To be

SUBJECT+TO BE+ADVERB

Examples:

  • They are never pleased to see me.

  • She is not usually bad tempered.

When we use an auxiliary verb/models (have, will, must, might, could, would, can, etc), the adverb is placed between the auxiliary and the main verb.

SUBJECT+AUXILIARY+ADVERB+MAIN VERB

Examples:

  • She can sometimes beat me in a race.

  • They might never see each other again.

  • They could occasionally be heard laughing.

  • I would hardly ever be unkind to someone.

There are some adverbs we can use at the starting of a sentence:

Usually, normally, often, frequently, sometimes, occasionally

Example:

  • Occasionally, I like to eat Italian food.

But we cannot use the following at the beginning of a sentence:

Always, seldom, rarely, hardly, ever, never

We use’ ever’ in questions and negative statements:

Examples:

  • Have you ever been to New Zealand?

  • I haven’t ever been to Switzerland.

  • I always study after class.

  • I usually walk to work.

  • I normally get good marks.

  • I often read in bed at night.

  • I sometimes sing in the shower.

  • I occasionally go to bed late.

  • I seldom put salt on my food.

  • I hardly ever get angry.

  • Vegetarians never eat meat.

  • everyday

  • Once a month

  • twice a year

  • four times a day

  • daily

  • monthly
